How do I get results? How do I feel better? These are just a couple questions that cross the mind of many people every single day. Luckily, the answer is simple. “Just get started.”
Something happened today that inspired me to write this blog post. As a CrossFit Coach and gym owner, you may think it comes easy to stay fit and stay healthy. That could not be further from the truth. Some days you just don’t feel like doing anything. You feel a little tired or a little crappy, and your mind takes control and tells you, just stay comfortable today and wait for when you feel a little sharper.
I did not want to work out today. I was tired. It has been a long stressful week. I did not really get any down time over the weekend. I was just exhausted. In my mind I said, maybe I need more rest. Tomorrow I should feel better and I will get after it. Then scrolling through Instagram in between classes, I came across a post from a fellow member that provided a message of “Having discipline is having the realizations that you don’t want to do something, but you still do what you need to do to get it done.” You may not always feel 100%, but those are the days that are most important to get something done.
Unfortunately, if you really wanted to wait for the days you felt perfect and everything clicked, you would be doing more waiting than actually doing. The state of the world is tough right now. There is stress everywhere, either from work, home, family, school, etc., and the dark cloud of covid-19 doesn’t do anything to help the cause and make things better. Life is tough right now! And we are doing everything we can to stay afloat and on track. Let me tell you that gets tough!
Coming from a past and present of dealing with depression on and off, mental health is no walk in the park, and absolutely something that should never be over looked. Just because you cannot physically see it, does not mean it is not a big part of our overall health. We all struggle with it from time to time, some more than others, but it is there.
These factors above make it hard to stay focused more often than not, but recognizing these thoughts and just getting started will take you so far. There are going to be days where you don’t feel like doing a damn thing, but in those situations, take a second and think about where you have been, how far you have come, and where you want to be. As long as you keep that fresh in your mind, and just start moving, everything else will follow suit.
I got that workout in today, and the slump from the last couple of days melted away. The stress was lifted and I was ready to go. I FELT BETTER, and accomplished. My mind was clear and I was ready for a new day. All I did was “Just Get Started.”
Next time you feel like straying from your nutrition, not getting a workout in, not doing that thing from work or home you have been putting off, think about this post. Recognize it, accept it, and get started.
