GLP-1 Medications, Weight Loss, and What You Should Know

I wanted to take a moment to talk about something that’s becoming more and more common in conversations with our members, and even folks who haven’t joined us yet. GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and others are being used by millions of people to help with weight loss — and there’s a lot of confusion, noise, and judgment surrounding them.

I’ve taken time to learn, talk to others, and really understand what these medications do — so I can better support anyone who might be using them or thinking about it. This blog isn’t about telling you what to do. It’s about giving you real, helpful information so you can take care of your body, your health, and your future — whatever path you choose.

Because if you’re here reading this, you care. And so do we.

WHAT IS A GLP-1?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a natural hormone your body produces after you eat. It helps you feel full and slows digestion — part of how your body regulates appetite and blood sugar. GLP-1 medications like Ozempic(semaglutide), Wegovy (semaglutide at a higher dose), and Mounjaro (tirzepatide, which also targets a second hormone called GIP) work by mimicking or enhancing this process.

They help people lose weight by:

  1. Reducing hunger — You feel full sooner, and cravings go down, which makes it easier to eat less overall.
  2. Slowing down digestion — Food stays in your stomach longer, keeping you fuller longer.
  3. Supporting better blood sugar control — GLP-1s help reduce the highs and crashes caused by refined carbs and improve insulin sensitivity.
  4. Reducing liver sugar output — The hormone glucagon (which tells your liver to release stored sugar) is lowered, keeping blood sugar levels more stable between meals.

Together, this can help people who have struggled for years finally see progress and feel in control again.

BUT IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE SCALE…

It’s important to understand: GLP-1s don’t tell your body what to lose. They just help you lose weight. That includes fat — but also muscle, which is something we want to preserve at all costs.

Muscle is what keeps you strong, functional, and independent as you age. It protects your joints. It supports your metabolism. It helps you live a longer, healthier life. So as the pounds come off, it’s critical to protect your muscle mass and strength through intentional training and nutrition.

That’s where we come in.

HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR HEALTH WHILE ON A GLP-1

We’ve helped several clients navigate this process safely and effectively. Here are three key habits we recommend building — ideally while you’re still on the medication, so they’re in place when you eventually come off:

1. Eat a high-protein, nutrient-dense diet.
Protein helps preserve muscle mass and keeps your body functioning well while your food intake is lower. It’s not about eating “more” — it’s about eating smarter.

2. Strength train — with guidance.
Energy levels can be low at times. That’s OK. A good coach can adjust your workouts to meet you where you’re at, and help you move safely while keeping strength and muscle on the table.

3. Learn how to fuel your body long-term.
Use this time as a window to learn what good nutrition really looks like. Whole foods. Balanced meals. Consistency. Not just “eat less” — but eat better in a way that fits your lifestyle. A nutrition coach can help a ton here.

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS — AND WHAT TO DO

Everyone responds a little differently, but here are a few patterns I’ve seen and heard about:

  • Nausea and fatigue. Eating less can make you feel a bit off, especially at first. It’s your body adjusting. Staying hydrated and choosing simple, protein-forward meals can help.
  • Lower energy during workouts. Again, this is normal. But movement is still important. Your intensity might change day to day, and that’s OK — showing up still matters.
  • Muscle loss and joint stress. Without strength training, your body will pull from anywhere to lose weight — including muscle. We want to protect that. The right movement can help keep your joints strong and resilient.

FINAL THOUGHTS

These medications are changing lives. That’s not an exaggeration. But we also don’t know everything about the long-term effects yet. What we do know is that movement, nutrition, and community still matter — maybe even more — when you’re on a journey like this.

We’ve helped others walk this path. We’d be honored to walk it with you, too.
